Theme and Variation:
Series and Sequence in Poetry

What is poetry if not the unendingly speakable repetition of things? But how exactly do things repeat? Can the same red wheelbarrow fall into the same river twice? How, in our own practice, do we engage this repetition in form, content, voice, image, rhetorial strategy, and so on. In this workshop we will explore our poetic patterns through the lens of theme and variation. Writing new poems, and working off existing poems, we will explore how poems reveal themselves in multiple iterations, and how their development in series and sequence suggests new strategies for composition, revision, and reading.
