About the Greyrock Writers' Festival |
The Greyrock Writers' Festival is made possible through the efforts of faculty, staff, and students at Colorado State University. The coordinators are Bruce Ronda, Steven Schwartz, Deanna Ludwin, Judy Doenges, John Calderazzo, Carol Ann Hixon, and Stephanie G'Schwind. The assistant coordinator is Judea Franck.
In addition to support from corporate and individual sponsors, we appreciate the help and encouragement provided by our colleagues. In particular, we are grateful to Bruce Ronda, chair of the English department, for his support and encouragement, and to the assistance provided by the department's administrative assistants, Marcia Aune, Sue Russell, Cathy Topf, and Marnie Leonard. We are also grateful for the energy and enthusiasm of the writers and workshop leaders who are participating in this year's Institute.
About the Institute: The Greyrock Writers' Festival began as wishful thinking during lunch in 1997 in the Lory Student Center at Colorado State University. Carol Cantrell, Mike Palmquist, and Louann Reid, all faculty members in the department of English, were exploring how the instructional resources in the department might be used to support graduate instruction during the summer months. Pattie Cowell, then chair of the department, greeted the idea with enthusiasm and launched a series of meetings that culminated in the first Greyrock Writers' Festival in 2000. The following year, the focus of the Institute shifted from graduate instruction to a community-wide celebration of reading and writing in the Rocky Mountain West, and a new format was adopted. That format -- involving free readings and fee-based workshops -- continues this year.
