The Art of the Vignette: Crossing Boundaries in Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction

Angela HodappWhat is a vignette? Put simply, a vignette is a short, descriptive literary sketch. But what is a vignette, exactly? Is it a prose poem? A very short story? A piece of nonfiction? Or is it something new entirely? Actually, a vignette can be any of these, and acclaimed authors-poets, fiction writers and nonfiction writers alike-are trying their hands at writing the vignette in recently published anthologies such as In Short: A Collection of Brief Nonfiction, In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal, and The Best of the Prose Poem: An International Journal.

What will we do in this workshop? First, we will read and discuss a variety of vignettes by such poets, authors, and essayists as Stuart Dybek, Terry Tempest Williams, Naomi Shihab Nye, Jon Davis, Sandra Cisneros, David Ignatow, and Will Baker. Then, using these examples as springboards, we will jump into our own vignettes; we will write and share with the group two or three pieces.

Who should take this workshop? Reluctant writers. Experienced writers. Frustrated writers. Beginning writers. Published writers. "Blocked" writers. Curious writers. Any writer who wants to try something new. This workshop will give you the opportunity to practice vignette writing much as an artist practices sketching-as a warm up exercise, as a way of approaching a difficult or daunting topic from many angles, and especially as a way of creating, in one sitting, a beautiful and complete piece of writing.
