Writing Short Fiction: Point of View as Active Participant

Kevin FoskinThe workshop will examine how a story's Point of View can do much more than simply tell a story. It can also have an active, discernable presence in the story-much like the presence any character might possess. This workshop will consist of three parts. First, we will briefly define what we mean when we label a specific point of view an active, participatory one. Second, we will attempt to identify and examine examples of POVs which have an active presence (Tolstoy, Sadaris, O'Connor, etc). Third, we will create active POVs of our own, using our own stories as a testing ground.

Participants should have some familiarity with the concept of Point of View and various different points of views normally employed by fiction writers, along with a general understanding of the basic elements of fiction writing. Finally, it will be useful if participants of this workshop have some experience with writing stories of their own.

Participants should bring to the workshop a story of their own and several favorite passages from published stories they admire.
