Mary CrowLetting the Poem Show You How to Read It

Workshop Leader: Mary Crow, Colorado Poet Laureate, Mary.Crow@ColoState.edu
Enrollment Limit: 25

This workshop will focus on the reading of a half dozen or so contemporary poems following the system devised by Edward Hirsch in his book, How to Read a Poem. Each poem, according to Hirsch, has within it indications of how the poem should be read and we can learn to follow those indications. First, I will explain this system and demonstrate how Hirsch explicates a poem using it. Then I will lead the group through a line-by-line reading based on the text. Afterward we will read as a group a series of poems that become progressively more difficult.
