Writing Family Histories

Workshop Leaders: Amy Cashulette Flagg and Demetrios Godenitz, godeem@hotmail.com
Enrollment Limit: 25

Session One: Getting Started Researching and Writing Family Stories and Histories

This workshop will consider why we research and write family stories/histories, our purposes in doing so, and possible audiences for our stories/histories. While not a complete introduction to genealogy, tips will given for developing a family tree and beginning to collect information and documents for further research. Participants will write and discuss as we consider ways to begin researching and writing, themes or topics we may want to explore within our own families, and possible ways to develop memories and collect the memories of others.

SessionTwo: Shaping and Crafting Family Stories and Histories

In this workshop, participants will be asked to consider such issues as writing about positive and negative aspects of family, how we represent ourselves and others in writing, public and private writing about ourselves and our families, and the (un)reliability of memory -- that we don't always remember details, or we may remember them differently than other family members do. Discussions and writing activities will be aimed at shaping and crafting character sketches and scenes to further develop family stories/histories.
