Enrollment Limit: 25
This workshop will focus on thinking about, and using, different and more vivid kinds of language. By different I mean language that may be other than what we are used to when writing poetry. I'm interested in talking about the possibilities for language in poetry, and we'll look at a few examples of poems that use language dynamically through close attention to detail and imagery, and practice writing using "other" kinds of language with the help of one or two exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to share their work (from the exercises) and their experiences, and talk about how using different kinds of language might potentially help their own writing and thinking about poetry. I will include with the workshop a short packet of poems that offer examples of some of the different ways to think about language and detail in poetry, as well as a number of writing exercises for further exploration of these issues.
