A Tourist in Your Own Town: Writing about Travel in Your Hometown & Abroad

In this poetry workshop, we will focus on the poetry of place with an emphasis on writing about travel and traveling experiences in both foreign countries and here in Fort Collins. The main focus of the workshop will be using the poetic techniques of concrete specific detail, image, metaphor, and simile. I would like for the participants to write about Fort Collins as if they were tourists by visiting ordinary sites in the city: a garage, a hair cutting salon, a Laundromat, a video store, a thrift shop, the country club, a sporting event.

Using Elizabeth Bishop's "Filling Station" as a model, participants will write a poem as if they were tourists in their own town. Students will also write a poem based on their travel experiences.

Our final product will be a poetic travel brochure that I will produce and distribute to participants.
